Maths

At Hugh Joicey, our Maths curriculum is based around White Rose Maths.  White Rose Maths is a comprehensive and adaptable mathematics curriculum and teaching approach designed for primary and secondary education levels. This program was developed by the White Rose Maths Hub, a collaborative network of teachers, educators, and mathematicians based in Yorkshire, England. White Rose Maths was initially created to meet the specific needs of schools in the UK, but its influence has since spread to other parts of the world.

At its core, White Rose Maths seeks to foster a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts among students. It does this by providing a structured and coherent progression of mathematical concepts and skills, ensuring that students build a strong foundation before moving on to more complex topics. The curriculum is organized into small, manageable steps, making it accessible to students of all abilities.

We use the mixed-age planning and the children really enjoy the structure of this learning.  We teach concepts through concrete - pictorial - abstract and we strongly believe in 'hands-on' learning.  As with all of our curriculum areas, we use outdoors and active learning whenever we can.
