Intent
At Hugh Joicey we believe that PSHE enables children to become healthier, more independent and more responsible members of society. We encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In doing so, we help to develop their sense of self-worth. We teach them how society is organised and governed. We teach children about their rights and about their responsibilities. PSHE makes a significant contribution to pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour, safety, well-being and ability to build healthy relationships with others.
Implementation
We participate in and promote national events such as: Mental Health Awareness Week, Anti-Bullying Week and Internet Safety Week.
The schemes of learning we teach and the activities outlined above ensure that we meet the statutory requirements set out in the new 2020 curriculum; Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education.
We have adopted a scheme of work from Jigsaw: this is a clear and progressive PSHE curriculum, which meets the statutory requirements to teach Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education. The scheme is divided into 6 different strands:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams & Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
Within each strand, we have designed age-appropriate topics for the classes. One topic per half term is taught to each class and these topics are explored in more detail as children move through school. Generally, content will be taught to both year groups, in a rolling programme, within our mixed age classes. We adapt sessions to meet the particular needs of our own children, for example discussions around farm safety will be included in our work on keeping safe.
In addition to PSHE lessons, our Collective Worships cover areas we feel children in school need to focus on at a particular moment. Our Vision of ‘Love one another’ ‘Love learning’ and ‘Love nature’ along with our values of Perseverance, Thankfulness and Kindness are key parts of our Collective Worships.
Impact
Through our PSHE and RSE curriculum, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become confident individuals who have positive body awareness, an in-depth knowledge of how to keep themselves safe and healthy and who will, through respect, tolerance and understanding, forge and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of family and friendship groups.
